Adapted from author Whitley Strieber's best-selling book about his contact with Grays, Communion is an intriguing and compelling work of science fiction... Or should that be documentary? Suffering from writer's block, New Yorker Strieber (Christopher Walken) heads to a cabin in the woods to focus on his latest work. There he undergoes a series of strange experiences, which he blocks from his memory. Later, under the influence of hypnosis, Strieber realises that he has been in contact with beings from another world.

Communion isn't a bad movie, but not the alien invasion-like blockbuster you may expect. Phillipe Mora makes an effort to give the film an air of surrealism, right down to even having the blatant symbolism of DeChirico paintings on the walls of Strieber's home (whether or not Strieber actually had such paintings is beside the point). The director tries to give the impression that Strieber is suffering a breakdown while simultaneously trying to present the events without too much distortion. He focuses on the psychological and emotional harm the experience does. We see Strieber describe his experiences to his doctor and then to a psychiatrist. Once his own mental health has been established, then (and only then) does he begin to consider the possibility that the creatures he has seen are actually real.
