UFO Cover Up
In ufology, cover up is commonly described as a supposed secrecy and public denial on the UFO phenomena, leaded by the Superpowers (USA, Italy, France, ...) and maintained through the years. If the UFO phenomenon gathered too much interest by raising questions, a deceiving follow up is inserted.

In ufology, cover up is commonly described as a supposed secrecy and public denial on the UFO phenomena, leaded by the Superpowers (USA, Italy, France, ...) and maintained through the years. Let's see a precise definition for this term:
Cover up: "An effort or strategy of concealment, especially a planned effort to prevent something potentially scandalous from becoming public."
When a scandal breaks, the discovery of an attempt to cover up the evidence
of wrongdoing is often regarded as even more scandalous than the original
deeds.
Initially, a cover up may require little effort: it will be carried out by
those closely involved with the misdeed. Once some hint of the hidden matter
starts to become public, the cover up gradually draws all the top leadership
of an organization into complicity in covering up a crime or misdeed that
was committed by few individuals. This is often regarded as tacit approval
of that behaviour.
Sometimes cover ups are successful (the one involving UFOs being one). Many risk to fail, however, as more and more people are drawn in and the possibility of exposure makes potential accomplices fearful of supporting the cover up. As it spreads, the cover up itself creates yet more suspicious circumstances.
The use of the cover up method is not exclusive to ufology. On the contrary, the Watergate Scandal, the Roman Catholic sex abuse cases, the 1996 U.S. campaign finance scandal and of course the Manhattan Project have been subject to wide cover ups, aiming at hiding facts and structures.
Debunking is a method used to distort facts, a way to apply a cover up:
Debunking: "to expose or ridicule the falseness, sham, or exaggerated claims of".
We can then say that the act through which a particular phenomenon is contained within acceptable limits of mainstream awareness is called debunking. A strategy of cover up, if you want. Debunking is alas confirmed by the fact that sceptics have never found the scientific interest in UFOs. The Scientific Community states there is no evidence. If the phenomenon gathered too much interest (remember crop circles) by raising questions, a deceiving follow up is inserted, enough to disappoint the public.
All this has one aim: the disinformation! The disinformation approach allows one interesting remark: while keeping the best, most convincing UFO evidence away from the public, scientists' interest is kept away from UFOs. Also because no one is prepared to think there is a disinformation in act. If the Roswell case were true, funds would have been asked to study the saucer, true?
Targets and plans
Regarding the UFO phenomenon, who are the targets of the disinformation strategy? I'd say two: the public and the ufologists. Ufologists, in particular, are the targets of different attacks aimed at inducing them in error and at discrediting them face to the public. The public is a passive target, nonetheless the public, the individual is conditioned, through medias, thanks to disinformation (with already few informations) and to censorship. For example, in Italy, broadcasting of Taken has been delayed of one year, Dark Skies has been censored after a few episodes, while Star Trek has been censored or moved to impossible night times. Many times, always in Italy, TVs such as RAI and Mediaset have played an important role in the UFO disinformation by presenting ridiculous stories, fragile cases as if it were all about show business and no factual information. In France, articles written by Pierre Lagrange represent somehow the attitude of French public opinion towards UFOs, in spite of the SEPRA and the COMETA Report.
While the cover up aims at stopping an overall, wide acceptance of the reality of the UFO phenomenon, a second plan is being played to educate the population (about UFOs) through medias (movies, TVs, books) under the covers, while controversial facts keep the public opinion away from an instant recognition. The Freedom Of Information Act (5 U.S.C. § 552, As Amended By Public Law No. 104-231, 110 Stat. 3048) allowed ufologists to request declassification of confidential documents. A document can be declassified if it does not menace the national security. It may not be by chance that science-fiction has become a mainstream genre.
How is a cover up possible?
Yet, many sceptics argue a cover up is impossible to hold for so long. Yet, the USA is the ideal nest for cover up and disinformation. Engaged in a quest of world domination and fight against communism, this Nation has opened its military doors to the industries and to private funds. Of course, USA needed scientists too. During WW2, after Pearl Harbor, USA decided to bet on the scientific and technological superiority. The priority was the atomic bomb. Manhattan Project has been an essential project that has changed the military, economic, cultural and social horizons of America: it concentrated in one place all military, economic and scientific means. A titanic project!
Now the interesting part: Manhattan Project was funded without informing the Congress, thanks to generic funding lines named "Engineer Service: Army; Expediting Production". These were voting without questioning by Americans. This reminds me of contemporary black budget (10 billions of dollars). A city was built to host the necessary human resources, including their families: Los Alamos, counting nearly 6000 citizens. Children born there possessed no birth place. In 1945, 200'000 employees worked for the project. Harry Truman, vice-president, was never informed of the Manhattan Project. No one within the Congress knew nothing until February 18, 1944. All this does teach us that USA is able to maintain a secret, even towards politicians.
The US Air Force is the most involved side of USA. In 1999, the USAF has been accused of infringing the the Law and the Congress with unauthorized projects. 800 millions were spent to purchase a satellite. In 1940, the Signal Security Agency is secretly created. The SSA is authorized to spy individuals, industries and governments as well by intercepting all communications.The SSA became the scary National Security Agency (NSA) in 1952.
Protection of informations passes through the secret, which is a key factor. In particular, two layers have been put in place:
- clearance
- need to know
A clearance is a status granted individuals, typically members of the military and employees of governments and their contractors, allowing them access to classified information, typically state secrets. Even if someone has all the necessary official approvals (such as a clearance) to access certain information, they should not actually access that information unless they have a need to know: that is, unless access to that information is necessary for the conduct of the person's official duties.
With all the above premises, a UFO cover up is perfectly possible. And real, even though some informations have been released to the public.
