Project SERPO is the name of an alleged American top secret exchange program, between the late 1940s and the mid-1960s, in which a selected, trained US military team was sent to Zeta Reticuli star system, home of a friendly race of Extraterrestrial Biological Entities (EBEs), aboard one of the star visitors' spacecraft. SERPO is how the team called the planet on which they stayed. In the beginning, the project was named "Crystal Knight".
The Serpo case has been started on November 2, 2005 by a retired senior official within the US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) who calls himself "Anonymous". Up to this day, no one knows his real identity. Anonymous has written that he is not acting individually and is part of a group of six DIA personnel working together as an alliance: three current and three former employees. He is their chief spokesman. Until December 21, 2005 all informations regarding Project SERPO were released through a mailing list moderated by Victor Martinez. No more information was transmitted until January 24, 2006, convincing most that the anonymous source had gone away. Bill Ryan, webmaster of serpo.org website, started receiving further communications from "Anonymous". Ryan has posted all the information on his website.
How Project SERPO started
Following "Anonymous", everything started from two UFO crashes, one occurring at Corona in 1947. One EBE was found alive, hiding behind a rock. As other investigators have already reported, the crash site was later cleaned and all evidence removed. "Anonymous" claims the bodies were taken to Los Alamos National Laboratory, because they had a freezing system that allowed the bodies to remain frozen for research. The craft was taken to Roswell and then onto Wright Field, Ohio.
It is nonetheless legitimate to think the US military tried to gather informations from the EBE. In fact, the anonymous source has written that:
"The live entity established communications with us and provided us with a location of his home planet. The entity remained alive until 1952, when he died. But before his death, he provided us with a full explanation of the items found inside the two crafts. One item was a communication device. The entity was allowed to make contact with his planet."
The EBE recovered from the crash had a communication device that allowed him to communicate with his people on Serpo. Communication between the EBE and the military never was easy: the US military didn't know the EBE language, while the EBEs didn't know English. Only further efforts brought some common ground between the two sides. Thanks to these public relations, in the end, an exchange program was possible. The year is 1965. The US military chose 12 individuals, 10 men and 2 women, for an extreme psychological and physical training to prepare them for the mission to Zeta Reticuli. It was planned for the team to stay 10 years on the alien planet, until 1975. Indeed, 8 returned in 1978: 2 died during the mission and 2 chose to stay on Zeta Reticuli. Once returned on Earth, The Air Force Office of Special Investigation (AFOSI) was responsible for their security and safety. AFOSI also conducted debriefing sessions with the returnees.
The trip to zeta reticuli
Thanks to a written diary and audio records made by the team during the whole mission (no one saw nor heard any), details about the whole trip and stay on Serpo are abundant. "Anonymous" has therefore been able to recall the team's trip aboard the EBE spacecraft as difficult:
"During the trip, each team member was frequently dizzy, disoriented and suffered headaches. The craft did not go through any weightlessness during the trip. The craft was very large and allowed the team to exercise."
In spite of the obvious problems related with human-EBE communication, the EBEs were kind and helpful, reports the anonymous source.
It took 9 months to reach the planet. The anonymous source has described in detail the planet Serpo: it was estimated to be about three billion years old. The two suns were about five billion years old, but only by estimation. There was a period of darkness, but not total darkness. The alien planet is located within a solar system of the Zeta Recticular Star System. The planet had two suns, but their angles were small and allowed some darkness on the planet depending on one's location. Furthermore, the planet was tilted, which allowed the northern part of the planet to be cooler. The planet was a little less than Earth's size. The atmosphere was similar to Earth's and contained the elements of Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen. Considering how the long trip caused physical problems, the arrival on Serpo wasn't less difficult. Following "Anonymous", the team required many months to adapt to the new conditions. The days being longer, perception of time wasn't the same. The brighter suns, in particular, seemed to be a problem for them. Not only: radiation levels were a bit higher than the Earth levels. For these reasons, the team later moved north to a cooler area of Serpo. Food represented also quite a challenge, since their military rations eventually finished and the team had to switch to native Serpo food. The exchange team, appearently, was able to gather datas about Serpo, even collecting soil, plant samples (no one ever saw them, anyway).
The EBE civilization
"Anonymous" doesn't avoid details on the alien culture. EBEs are what we call Grays. The alien civilization was estimated to be about 10'000 years old. They evolved from another planet, not on Serpo. Their original home planet was threatened with extreme volcanic activity, so they had to relocate to Serpo in order to survive. This occurred some 5'000 years ago. The friendly EBEs possess a well structured, somehow centralized society: each birth is planned, each alien builds whatever he needs. There are scientists and industries. There is a quick mention about a clone named "J-ROD". The EBEs have one education centre and a kind of council that governs each aspect of their lives. Their chief looked like different:
"The leader of the Ebens is a larger creature than the others. He seems to be more aggressive than the other Ebens. When I write aggressive, I don't mean in a hostile way. He seems to be the boss, similar to me, as the team commander. His voice, although after all this time, I still can't understand any words, is harsh and with a tone that is different from the rest."
As already stated, communication with the aliens was an issue. Only a minor part of the EBEs knew English, yet they could not understand everything. A female EBE, nicknamed "EBE2", demonstrated enough English skills to become the "trait d'union" between the team and the rest of the aliens. Nonetheless, a misunderstanding about the use of a team member's dead body nearly lead to a diplomatic incident.
is it true?
Of course, the big question is: is the story true? "Anonymous" claims how the team encountered difficulties in adapting to the spaceship and to the planet. This is plausible but, unfortunately, nothing more than that. The rest is pure fiction: the science contained in Project Serpo cannot stand up. Other versions of an exchange program have surfaced as well. Even a famous movie ended with a team being sent aboard a spacecraft. A believer may argue that the story is essentially true, but that the details are not. A story that doesn't receive solid confirmations remains just a story, which doesn't help.
One more: the planet Serpo is located in the Zeta Reticuli star system, suggesting there is life. Unfortunately, astronomy tells us there is no Earth-like planet near the binary yellow dwarfs of Zeta Reticuli. John Dreher, Ph. D., of the SETI Institute, has stated very clearly:
"On the astronomy front, Zet 1 Ret (HD 20766) and Zet 2 Ret (HD 20807) are a wide binary system in the southern skies. Each component is a G star much like the Sun. The binary orbit period is long enough that planetary systems could be stable around these stars; however, to the best of my knowledge, no one has detected any planets so far. They are 36 lightyears from Earth."
In the end, it's honest to say there is no evidence to support it. The source remains anonymous, which is useless to the research. Furthermore, no UFO researcher will ever find the files related to Project SERPO, if the project ever existed and if the project is secret. A sceptical source even claims that "Anonymous" is Richard C. Doty, the one involved in the mental breakout of Paul Bennewitz .
