Ufologists and sceptics have advanced different hypothesis, hoping to offer a global solution to the UFO problem. Some seem to fit well for some cases, while others fit for others. The UFO phenomenon seems to possess many sides, some of them controverted.
Extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH)
Very popular since the 1950's when Martians were imagined. This thesis has been imptoved along with the advancement of astronomy: more civilizations, but from far away galaxies (see the Drake equation). Mankind has become citizen of the universe. Alien visitors came here maybe for ethnographical studies. This last statement creates a further doubt: why so many alien civilizations visited us? How did they all ever found us? Even the 5% of UFO cases seemed too much. On the opposite, the ETH forces us to conceive UFO as "nuts and bolts", metal machines engeneered by someone. Tracks on the ground were not enough and not enough eloquent. Supporters of this hypothesis are Pierre Guérin, Jean-Pierre Petit, Claude Poher, Roberto Pinotti.
Psychological hypothesis
UFO were not at all "nuts and bolts", but a result of our psyche. A key book has been written by Carl Gustav Jung, published in 1961 with the title "Un Mythe Moderne". At that time UFOs were called flying saucers. Jung studied what witnesses reported as dreams, without considering any physical aspects. The UFO were only the inadequacy of modern mankind face to the real world, and the unweave mankind is feeling: drawing from the topicality of the moment, and from the collective unconsciousness mankind has always been impregnated into. Furthermore, Jung sees symbols in some UFOs: cigars are phallus, saucers are maternal breasts. UFOs were visible contents of psychism. Physical aspects were due to parapsychological effects. We cannot forget the later contribution of Michel Monnerie and his monnerisme.
Psychopathological hypothesis
Rather rare and concerning a few cases. The psychiatrist may find, behind witnesses, certain troubles linked to hysteria, paraphrenia, paranoic delirium, and to schizophrenia. In other words, mitomaniacs, narcisismus may explain some cases, or a mix of reality and pathologies. The witness, presenting such pathology, distorted the event he lived.
Parapsychological hypothesis
During the first days of contactees, Venusians and Martians contacted certain persons. With the advancement of astronomy, the hometown of ETs has been placed more and more distantly. At the same time, researchers find out more anomalous elements in reports. Such anomalies questioned the materiality of UFOs. What may reproduce the very same anomalous balls of lights, observed both from rare mediums and from witnesses during sightings, were the "psi plasma". If some subjects are capable to use PK, they may able to modify the real world to produce UFOs.
Religious hypothesis
Are UFOs means of Satan or of God? Religions have always avoid a reply (despite the positive opinion on UFOs expressed by Monsignor Corrado Balducci). Thanks to this gap, single groups have found a place and a reason to support such unprobable hypothesis. Nevertheless, I must mention how ancient cultures attributed any anomalous phenomena to divine forces. If this was due to the lack of scientific culture and the force of religion, in some other cases it's a field for clypeology.
The advanced human aircraft hypothesis
All or some UFO sightings were advanced, secret or experimental aircraft of earthly origin. During the 1980's, there were reports of "black triangle" UFOs. Some of these were the secret F-117 Nighthawk, which became known to the public in November 1988. Nazi Germany is known to have experimented with circular jet planes, the V-7. At least one of the scientists involved was taken to the USA after WWII. Even if Germany had working prototypes, they were destroyed before Russians and Americans could take them.
